Couples Therapy
At some point or another, every couple faces challenges. It's the reality of living in relationships as humans. Communication fails, intimacy struggles, and couples are left feeling confused or stuck in patterns no longer serving them. Couples therapy can be the exact pausing point some couples need to reflect, listen more deeply, share more openly, and start to build new patterns.
My Approach
Emotionally-focused therapy (EFT) s a structured, short-form approach to couples therapy, developed in tandem with the science of adult attachment, a profound developmental theory of personality and intimate relationships. Attachment views human beings as innately relational, social, and wired for intimate bonding with others. The EFT model prioritizes emotion and emotional regulation as the key organizing agents in individual experience and key relationship interactions. EFT for couples is the gold standard for empirically validated intervention in this field.

How does it work? As an EFT-informed therapist, I guide couples through an initial de-escalation of conflict to allow for the identification of the couple's unique cycle, or "dance," and underlying emotions. Once safety is established, I help each partner engage with parts of self that they have hidden from themselves and/or from their partner. As each partner learns how to accept their discoveries about their partner, the couple can start to safely express their needs and desires, which facilitates the ability for couples to problem-solve old problems in new ways.
Issues I Treat
There is a common misconception that couples therapy is only needed when things are drastically wrong or bad, but therapy can support couples in a variety of circumstances, including but not limited to:
ā
Navigating a New Life Phase
ā
Negative Experiences Outweigh the Positive
Constant Arguing or Bickering
Avoidance of Communication
Repetition of the Same Argument With No Resolution
Feeling Like Roommates More Than Lovers
Contemplating or Recovery From Cheating/Affair(s)
Exploring New Relationship Structure (i.e. Consensual Non-Monogamy)
ā
Navigating Uncoupling/Divorce
ā
and more!

Couples therapy is not usually covered by health insurance because many insurance companies do not deem it “medically necessary”. That being said, couples therapy is typically a briefer form of therapy, taking between an average of 8-20 sessions depending on multiple factors.
Where Do Sessions Take Place?
I can offer in-person couples therapy services from my beautiful Pasadena office at Honest Insight Counseling at 1 W. California Boulevard or virtual sessions via a HIPAA-compliant video conferencing service.
